Medication for hair loss treatment

Over the counter medications for hair health problems

Hair loss, in spite of of its type, is a common and distressing phenomenon. Recently, there has been increasing number of people suffering from hair loss or thinning. Thus, it is very important to develop new therapeutic medications to prevent hair loss and to enhance hair growth.

Since ancient times, many chemicals have been tried to cure baldness, however, only two drugs so far have been approved for hair loss treatment by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA, U.S.A); i.e., Minoxidil and Finasteride.

Minoxidil for hair loss treatment

Minoxidil for hair loss treatementMinoxidil (saled asĀ  Rogaine) was originally synthesized as a potassium channel opener and was further developed as an anti-hypertensive. Minoxidil has been proven to be effective both in stimulating new hair growth and in helping to prevent continued hair loss in both men and women.

Nevertheless, its exact mechanism has not been clearly elucidated.
The most common adverse side effects of Minoxidil include scalp irritation, which occurs in about 7% of patients using the medicine for hair loss treatment, and hypertrichosis, which is noted in women.

Finasteride for prostate and hair loss treatment

Finasteride(saled brand Propecia) was initially used for curing prostatic hypertrophy and later found to stimulate hair. In spite of its prominent hair growing effect, its use is limited because of potential side effect especially in women.

Attempts have been focused to discover effective medication for hair loss treatment.
Due to the potential for teratogenic effects in male fetuses, finasteride is not FDA approved for use in women.

The main side effects of Finasteride therapy are sexual side effects such as decreased libido and erectile/ejaculatory dysfunction, which occurred in fewer than 2% of men in one trial.

In one study, these negative side effects were reversed with cessation of the medication for hair loss treatment.

The combined use of Finasteride and Minoxidil has been studied in the animal model.

Combined use of Finasteride with Minoxidil had greater effects on hair loss than either treatment alone.
