All the female in the study (between 18 and 65) suffered rigorous female pattern hair loss.

When compared with a control group who were not going bald, the female were all found to have a variant of the oestrogen receptor beta gene or ESR2, which seemed to make hair follicles more sensitive to the body’s oestrogen levels.

The gene variant’s link to hair loss was particularly strong in female over 40. Those who did not suffer hair loss had a different variant of the same gene, which was less affected by oestrogen levels.

Rod Sinclair, professor of dermatology at St Vincent’s and one of the trial’s leaders, said: ”female frequently notice that their hair thickens up during pregnancy and they frequently experience hair loss after the delivery of the baby when they are breastfeeding, which is a low-oestrogen condition, the same as the menopause stage.”

Scientists from from Colombia, Rockefeller and Stanford Universities, believe they have discovered a gene that significantly  impacts hair growth as well as hair follicle miniaturization; the phenomenon that is the cornerstone of male and female pattern baldness.

The gene identified is named APCDD1 (adenomatosis polyposis down-regulated 1), and was found in patients suffering with hereditary hypotrichosis simplex, a condition that usually presents itself in childhood.

Hereditary hypotrichosis simplex is a rare autosomal dominant form of hair loss characterized by hair miniaturization, a process in which the hair follicle actually shrinks and normal thick terminal hair is gradually replaced with fine, velus hair.

The American Hair Loss Association states that “Ultimately, this is another valued piece of a very complex puzzle that will allow greater insight into the process of follicle miniaturization”.

“We have at last made a connection between Wnt signaling and human hair disease that is highly significant,” says lead author Angela M. Christiano, Ph.D., Professor of dermatology and genetics & development at Columbia University Medical Center,“And unlike commonly available treatments for hair loss that involve blocking hormonal pathways, treatments involving the Wnt pathway would be non-hormonal, which may enable many more people suffering from hair loss to receive such therapies.”

Female hair loss is not only a cosmetic issue. It is quite a common incidence as many women are affected by the traumatic condition.

Nearly 40 percent women by age 50 show signs of thinning hair and there are less than 45 percent who actually reach the age of 80 with a full head of hair.

Genetic makeup of 500 women assessed

In a bid to determine whether there was a strong genetic predisposition that causes females to lose hair, scientists from St Vincent’s Hospital and University of Melbourne examined the genetic makeup of 500 women who had lost 50 percent of their hair.
All the women under examination had severe thinning or loss of scalp hair. They were aged between 18 to 65 years. A relative study was conducted of women not suffering from female baldness.

The studies results

The researchers found ESR2, a gene variant that seemed to make hair follicles more sensitive to the oestrogen levels of the body.

In contrast, women not suffering from baldness exhibited a different variant of the same gene. However, it was less affected by the body’s oestrogen level.
The researches have shown that the gene ESR2 appears to be the culprit in all of the women who were suffering from hair loss.

Ostrogen and female hair loss

Earlier it was considered that the hormonal factor, oestrogen played a fundamental role in hair growth. It helped the hair grow faster and stay on the head longer, resulting in thicker hair.

High oestrogen levels were attributed to glorious tresses during pregnancy. However, on the other hand the gradually shedding of hair several weeks after the baby’s birth was linked to the deficiency of the hormone.
Co-author of the study, Rod Sinclair, professor of dermatology at St Vincent’s stated, ”Women often notice that their hair thickens up during pregnancy and they often experience hair loss after the delivery of the baby when they are breastfeeding, which is a low-oestrogen state, the same as the menopause stage.”

He added, ”If you give a woman hormone replacement therapy there was the belief that the high oestrogen count might be good for the hair, but these findings suggest it’s more likely to be the exact opposite.
“In situations where women are taking either the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy and they experience hair loss it may be may advantageous to select low-oestrogen preparations to minimize the impact on hair.”
The findings will be presented at the World Congress for Hair Research in Cairns next month.

Dry or Frizzy Hair

When choosing hair products, use a shampoo and conditioner that restore moisture to the hair. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week until texture improves. Don’t treat hair with leave-in volumizers; instead use leave-in conditioners.

Wrap hair in the towel and let the towel blot excess moisture.

Use a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends of the hair and moving higher up the strands once there are no tangles below. Do not run fingers through damp hair.

Brittle hair needs to air dry. Never use a curling iron. Soft rollers are more kind to hair and will give it more poof. If hair must be blow-dried, use low heat and less tension.

Straw-Like Hair and Graying Hair

The theory that coloring hair will increase breakage is not entirely true. Hair colors that are much lighter than the natural hair color can cause drying because of the lightening ingredients, so it is better not to over-lighten hair. But choosing a color closer to the original natural color is fine.

If hair is lightened over and over for years, it can suffer and become brittle and straw-like. This can happen even when the final moisturizing and conditioning treatment is done. There are two causes of female hair thinning – androgenetic alopecia which is more common, and traumatic alopecia. It is important to understand that products for male hair loss are not formulated for use by women.

Squeeze the conditioner onto the hands. Use hands to apply conditioner to the longer section of hair first. There will still be a thin film of conditioner on the hands. Wipe hands over the hair on the crown of the head so that just the outer hairs get the treatment. While the conditioner is left on the head for a few minutes, a little of the conditioner will soak down to the scalp, but most will stay on the hair.

Coloring the hair does not usually contribute to thinning hair, since coloring is applied to the outside of the hair shaft, but women with traumatic alopecia should consult a doctor before coloring their hair.

Styles to Camouflage Thin Hair

While waiting for hair to regrow, try hairstyles that camouflage thinning hair. Try a shorter cut, above the shoulder. Both straight and curly hair can be cut into layers to add volume. Combing hair into a zigzag part can hide thinning hair on the top of the head, as can a ‘bedhead’ or deliberately messy hairstyle.

These tips can help remedy many types of hair problems. Gentle handling of hair while shampooing, conditioning, and styling can go a long way to restoring and maintaining healthy texture.
